Sloe gin negroni

The twelve cocktails of Christmas
#9: Sloe gin negroni

Sloe gin is delicious, and sipping a little glass of it neat while watching Alastair Sim’s Scrooge discover the spirit of Christmas makes a perfect holiday afternoon.

But a shot of sloe gin isn’t a cocktail. This led to the idea of using sloe gin in a negroni – where it cosied right up with the red vermouth, and stood its ground against the bitterness of the Cinzano.

The proportions are a matter of taste, and depend on the sweetness of the sloe gin and vermouth. I kept it simple with a 1:1 ratio, but there’s room to experiment here…

  • 15ml gin
  • 15ml sloe gin
  • 15ml Cinzano
  • 15ml red vermouth
  • lemon peel, to garnish
  1. Combine the gin, sloe gin, Cinzano, and sweet red vermouth in a glass over ice.
  2. Garnish with a twist of lemon.

Negroni is one of my favourite cocktail! I also adore the sloe gin, we made it this year and it turned up to be perfect! I think I’m gonna try your suggestion 🙂

Lucky you having homemade sloe gin – I ended up buying a bottle for this cocktail. Next year…

🙂 Well, but your ‘home bar’ (after reading your recent posts) sounds way more substantial then our one. We only always have gin, whisky, martinis (dry and rosso) and sloe gin (but this one only once a year) 🙂

It’s definitely more substantial these days…;-)
