Apparently, savoury porridge is having a moment. I’m hailing myself as a breakfast pioneer for topping my porridge with hot sauce, butter, salt and pepper rather than sugar since childhood.
After twenty-five years of scoffing at me rather than with me, Adam tried his first bowl of savoury porridge a couple of days ago. “This is delicious!” he said. “Where have you been all my life?”
Savoury porridge
(serves 1)
- 1/2 cup (125 ml) rolled oats
- 3/4 cup (187 ml) milk
- salt and pepper
- butter, hot sauce, green onion to serve
- Combine the rolled oats, milk and a pinch of salt in a microwaveable jug or bowl. Cook uncovered on high for two minutes. (This is the right time for our 850 watt microwave. You may need to adjust it for your oven.)
- Top with a pat of butter, a teaspoon of hot sauce, salt, pepper and thinly sliced green onion.
I nearly jumped, reading your post.. The thing is, just last week-end I was telling to few of our friends about my Mum’s savoury porridge which she makes from time to time and how good it is, and they all thought it’s too weird 🙂
So, thank you, Andrea, for proving them wrong. I’ll show them your post and the link to the article, and, hopefully, we’ll make them to eat….savoury porridge 🙂
P.S: My Mum makes it with caramelised onion and bacon, by the way.
That is so funny! I’ve been getting teased about savoury porridge for as long as I can remember. Adam and I have been married for seventeen years and he tried it for the first time just the other day.
Love the sound of the onion and bacon by the way 🙂
It’s true. I scoffed at the idea but it is delicious!
It took twenty years, but you got there…:-)
This is the only way I eat oatmeal! So glad to know I’m not alone in my love of savory porridge 🙂
I’m with you! I’ve taken so much stick for it over the years, but it seems like we were right all along…;-)
