Once I’d decided to make nachos, knocking up a batch of margaritas was a no-brainer. For the first round, I followed the family recipe in Fern’s Food – 3 parts tequila, 2 parts Triple Sec, and 1 part Roses lime cordial. Drinkable, but too sweet for my palate – and didn’t quite tick the margarita box either.
For the second round, I went 2:1 tequila to Triple Sec and replaced the lime cordial with freshly squeezed lime juice… and it was just right. Salud!
Margarita
(serves 1)
- salt
- 50 ml tequila
- 25 ml Triple Sec
- juice of half a lime
- Wet the outer rim of a glass with lime juice, and roll it in salt.
- Add the tequila, Triple Sec and lime juice to a cocktail shaker.
- Fill it with ice, then give the contents a sharp shaking.
- Pour into the salted glass and serve.
just the proportions I decided upon after experimenting. the critical element is the fresh lime juice. Will be sampling some today as the projected temperature is 33 degrees.
I think I’ll be further “refining” this recipe myself this afternoon!
Andrea…this is indeed Fern’s tried and tried and tried (Ha-Ha) recipe which we have always used. Fondly remember her serving these on the deck at McBride.. we always had so much to talk about! Has to be Rose’s Lime Cordial…that premixed rubbish is terrible! Heard you reached 30 degrees; we are in the midst of another scorcher week but we have so many beautiful lakes to visit! Just came back from Purden Lake because we are in the midst of a kitchen reno and had to be here for ‘stuff’. Due to reno, anything in a blender is very apropos! I am enjoying all the recipes..not an adventurous cook like yourself and Fern but also tried the Fish Tacos and they are terrific! Love to Adam and the girls….soccer season fast approaching! Take care of each other and thanks for inviting me onto this site.
Actually, you are right…we only do one triple sec but still use the Rose’s Cordial…fresh lime juice good too but we raise our glass to Fern when we use the Cordial!!
You’re most welcome, and glad you enjoyed the fish tacos — that recipe is a firm family favourite around here!
I couldn’t find Rose’s lime cordial, so we have a supermarket own brand at the moment, which may have what made the first batch too sweet. Will definitely try again when I get Roses back in stock, but with one part triple sec.
