It was a surprise to discover that Beulah’s honey cake doesn’t actually have honey in it. She always was an international woman of mystery…;-)
…and an excellent cook. If Beulah opted to use golden syrup instead of honey I expect there’s a good reason for it. And there are a lot of dry honey cakes out there.
Actually this is the first time I’ve eaten honey cake when I wasn’t already stuffed to the gills with a holiday meal, which made it far more enjoyable.

There’s something gingerbready about basler leckerli – despite the absence of ginger. And something Christmassy too, with the cloves, nutmeg and mixed peel.
So they weren’t my first choice for our World Cup cook-off, but the thought of eating cheese fondue in the sweltering heat tipped it in their favour.
Granola is mainstream fare these days, but when mum first made in the early 1970s it was pretty exotic. You certainly couldn’t buy it in the grocery store.
I’m not sure where she came across the recipe – perhaps in an issue of Prevention magazine? – but I’m glad she did.
Mum’s granola was my go-to breakfast throughout my childhood. When I went off to university, Mum would send big jars of her granola in my care packages, and there were plenty of times I’d opt for a bowl over whatever the canteen was serving up.
